Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We are located at 29C-10th Street in the heart of Downtown Brandon, Manitoba. We've lived most of our lives here, we've raised our kids here and we're so proud to call this our home and serve this community.

Planning a visit? Take a look at our current store hours and closures.

Do you really bake your breads fresh every day?

We do indeed! We believe that our breads and pastries are best when baked fresh, from-scratch and taken home the same day. They have a shorter shelf life than some of our other selections so we want to get them in your hands as close as possible to the time when they come out of the oven.

Any breads that don't sell within 24 hours of being baked are pulled from our shelves and donated to local charities.

Can I place a preorder?

Absolutely! Start by choosing a pickup date, then Bakery Preorders will show you the breads, pastries, seasonal favourites, and other good things we're making for that day.

Do you buy locally?

Supporting local growers and producers is precisely what we do, whenever possible, with a focus on supporting family-run operations. We want you to know that we do everything we can to keep your dollars right here in Westman whenever possible. Here is just a sampling of the items that we have been able to source in Manitoba:

  • Flour and grains
  • Milk, butter, cream and cheese
  • Beer
  • Eggs
  • All kinds of veggies and herbs
  • Mushrooms
  • Apples and berries

Some things just aren't available in Manitoba, like chocolate, olives or bananas. And sometimes the growing season in Manitoba is short and we wish to bring you greater availability than what our local market can provide. So, in short, here's our philosophy for purchasing:

  • Buy from local, family-run businesses, then
  • Buy from Manitoba producers, and if we can't we
  • Buy from other Canadian sources, and finally
  • We do our best to source from ethical, sustainable producers.

Why don't you have my favourite thing on your menu all the time?

Some things are just best served when they're in season. We make every effort to bring you the best ingredients from local producers, which means that availability varies from time-to-time.

We also do our best to keep our costs down as much as possible. At certain times of the year, some ingredients get much pricier and it is hard for a small business to absorb those costs. Rather than increasing our prices, we instead choose other menu items to bring you variety.

But don't worry, if it's a good one, we'll bring it back!

I have this allergy...

Please do ask, and please ask before ordering. We take allergy questions seriously and will gladly share the ingredient information available to us. Everything we make is prepared in a shared kitchen that regularly handles dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat, and other common allergens, so cross-contact is possible and we cannot guarantee an allergen-free product.

Can you bake a cake for a celiac?

We wish we could give you a confident yes, but we can't. We do not have a separate gluten-free facility, and our kitchen regularly handles wheat and other grains. That means we cannot guarantee that a cake or other baked product is safe for someone with celiac disease or a severe allergy.

What do you mean by "gluten-friendly"?

When we call something gluten-friendly, we mean its recipe does not intentionally include gluten-containing ingredients. It is still prepared in the same kitchen as our breads and other products containing wheat and grains. That distinction matters: gluten-friendly does not mean certified gluten-free, and it is not suitable for anyone who needs strict gluten avoidance because of celiac disease or a severe allergy.

I have a high sensitivity to corn products. Do you have anything I can eat?

Please ask us, and we'll gladly help you look at the current ingredients. Wheat City Sourdough has a simple flour, water, and salt recipe. That said, everything is made in a shared kitchen, so we cannot guarantee that ingredients are free from corn derivatives or that cross-contact has not occurred.

Do you use commercial yeast?

We use both, depending on the bread. Our signature Wheat City Sourdough contains no commercial yeast; instead, we leaven it with a starter built from our own blend of locally milled flour. From feeding the starter through the pre-ferment and final dough, the full process can take up to three days. That time helps develop its rich flavour and open texture. Other breads and baked goods do use commercial yeast, so please ask if you have a particular loaf in mind.

Can I place a custom order for today?

Sometimes, but it depends on what you're after. Made-to-order food generally needs advance notice because we prepare it from scratch. Check Bakery Preorders for upcoming pickup dates, or call 204-721-0719 if you need something sooner. There may already be something wonderful in the works that fits what you need.

Can you decorate a cake with a copyrighted character?

We are not licensed to reproduce copyrighted characters without permission, but we can still help make the cake feel special. Depending on the request, we may be able to use a customer-supplied licensed cake topper or leave space for you to add decorations at home. Ask us what will work for your cake.
